Knowledge transfer

Our project and the University of Malaya Social Security Research Centre (SSRC) have agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate cooperation regarding the transfer of knowledge in the fields of population economics, econometric methodology and survey implementation.
Under the agreement, our project leader Prof. Ichimura is scheduled to visit the University of Malaya later this summer to participate in consultations with the local experts and deliver relevant lectures. The Malaysian hosts are currently making preparations to conduct the Malaysian Ageing and Retirement Study (MARS), and are seeking assistance in the following areas:
1. The structure and design of a survey for collecting data on the socioeconomic and health characteristics of the elderly;
2. Concrete, possible usages of the data gathered by such a survey, i.e. the analyses that could be conducted based on MARS; and
3. The integration of the survey on the socioeconomic status and health of the elderly with the methodology of the National Transfers Accounts (NTA), the indices of which are currently being constructed for Malaysia.
Since our project focuses on implementing a similar Japanese survey (the Japanese Study on Aging and Retirement, JSTAR) and the refinement of the NTA, our experts, Principal Investigator Prof. Hidehiko Ichimura and Project Professor Naohiro Ogawa, who is also currently serving as the Holder of the SSRC Old-age Financial Protection Chair, are expected to play an important role in assisting the development and effective utilization of the Malaysian Ageing and Retirement Study.
