An article by Dr. Shimizutani in the daily Nikkei

Dr. Satoshi Shimizutani, a co-investigator with our project, has published an article entitled "The Untapped Work Capacity of Japanese Elderly Males is Huge" in the renowned daily "Nikkei" on the situation regarding the employment of elderly workers in Japan (May, 5th, p.19).

Dr. Shimizutani's points out that, amid concerns regarding the shrinking of the population of productive ages (15-64), the working potential of the age gropu 65-69 tends to be overlooked. His estimations, based on the data collected by JSTAR, show that as many 40% of Japanese elderly males aged 65-69 could be added to the workforce thanks to their good health. He, thus, calls for the creation of conditions that would enable those elderly who wish to continue to work after retirement to actually do so, such as better provision of work-related information, more efficient matching of elderly workers with potential employers, and more flexible working arrangements for the elderly.
