Training conducted by Prof. Ogawa in Malaysia

In mid August our Project Professor Naohiro Ogawa participated in a large training event "Regional In-situ Training Programme on Gerontology, Geriatrics and Gerontechnology" in Kuala Lumpur, organized by the Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing, the International Institute on Ageing United Nations - Malta, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Prof. Ogawa made three presentations: "Economic Growth in Aging Societies", "Older Workers and the Ageing Work Force" and "The National Transfer Accounts: Population Ageing and the Generational Economy."
In the first presentation, Prof Ogawa spoke about the role of the first and second demographic dividends in boosting economic growth, by referring to Japan and other selected Asian countries on a time-series basis.
In the second presentation he addressed the issue of to what extent labor market responses involving an increased participation of the elderly could alleviate the burden of population aging, by taking up the cases of Japan, South Korea, Thailand, China and Taiwan.
Prof. Ogawa's third presentation shed light on the changing roles of private and public transfers brought about by the process of population aging in East and Southeast Asia.
